Our History
2012
Whangarei Men’s Shed formed in early 2012
Registered as Incorporated Society (March 2012)
Leased the old Kiwi House from Whangarei Museum & Heritage Park to September 2013. The building required gutting before we were able to set up a work shop.
Started to investigate options to provide for permanent premises on a long-term basis.
Commenced community projects.
Obtained a long-term management contract with the Whangarei District Council (WDC) to manage the Kamo War Memorial Hall. This provides a regular funding source for our operation.
2013
After viewing 16 possible options for a permanent home we commenced negotiations with Whangarei District Council to occupy the old Railway Station.
When our lease expired with the Kiwi House we started utilising the station for storage. In late August the WDC passed a Notice of Motion to sell us the station building and lease us the land it occupied. This allowed us to set up a temporary workshop in a habitable area of the station.
