The Whangarei branch of N.Z. Mens Shed Association became an incorporated society on the 23rd March, 2012. Number 2558523 and we were registered as a charity with the Dept. of Internal Affairs on the 14th March 2014. Registration Number is CC50320.
The members moved into the old Kiwi House at the Whangarei Heritage
Park in May 2012. Whilst enjoying our short stay at the old Kiwi House
it was obvious that a much bigger space was required to meet the needs
of our organisation.
In 2013 we moved to our new home, the Whangarei Railway station.
When people think ‘Men’s Shed’ they think Railway Station’ and vice versa.
To create a community ‘Hub’ at the other side of town.
To establish a multi-workshop facility that engages men in a mixture of constructive and recreational activities.
To be an asset to Whangarei in respect of promotional activities of a tourism nature AND a leading social interaction centre.
To be a draw card for men of all ages who want to share their experience and skills with the rest of the community.
To challenge the residents of the district: “TO GIVE IS TO RECEIVE”!
Positive health benefits for men include, decreased isolation; regaining a sense of purpose after retirement, sickness or unemployment; and friendship. They also provide an opportunity for men to learn about health and illness prevention. Increased social support is associated with better mental and physical health.
Other individual benefits include, a place to be yourself and do what you want, when you want, how you want; a place with other men you can relate to; exchange ideas; a place to learn; a place to teach; a place to do nothing if you want; a place to support your community through projects; a place to talk to blokes about bloke’s things;
Community benefits – Whangarei Men’s Shed has in its short existence produced dozens of projects for other not-for profit organisations. A sample of these can be seen under Library/ Projects on this web site.
